Profoundly inspired by the unparalleled genius of William Shakespeare and his other illustrious predecessors, I, too, chose to «unlock» my own heart for those enamoured of Elizabethan poetry in the form of an English sonnet. Unfortunately, the latter is out of fashion these days. And yet there seems to be still much coveting to be told in this time-honoured poetic form, which is precisely why I wish to attempt its revival by presenting my own sonnets to their prospective readers.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

SONNET I<\/span><\/p>

Possess’d is all my heart of woeful bliss —<\/span><\/p>

Since that both bliss and woe are her two names —<\/span><\/p>

No sooner warm’d than cruelly sear’d it is,<\/span><\/p>

So mad in love by love’s still madder flames.<\/span><\/p>

Yet mind’s too loath heart’s fullness to eclipse<\/span><\/p>

And as she stings, it reasons thus with me:<\/span><\/p>

‘Sweet physic dwells on those empoison’d lips!<\/span><\/p>

Thy soul’s disease is past philosophy.’<\/span><\/p>

Ay, piety droops where these passions rise<\/span><\/p>

And so, be it my shame, so much I dote<\/span><\/p>

On her light-footed gait that where she hies<\/span><\/p>

I hie t’end life with life’s sole antidote.<\/span><\/p>

How craves my mind with gentle lines to limn<\/span><\/p>

Her gentler lines\u2019 alluring excellence.<\/span><\/p>

I would fain praise these with an ageless hymn<\/span><\/p>

Love breathes upon the lyre of man\u2019s sense,<\/span><\/p>

Yet those before me had enwreath\u2019d of old<\/span><\/p>

In flow\u2019ry speech their nymph-like ladies, which,<\/span><\/p>

Their outward gifts oft having thus extoll\u2019d,<\/span><\/p>

Made poor the word in making those too rich.<\/span><\/p>

Thus being robb\u2019d of lush similitude,<\/span><\/p>

I\u2019ll rob no flow\u2019r of its own scent or tinct:<\/span><\/p>

Why wrap in rosy robes her lily nude<\/span><\/p>

If these once fair turn\u2019d black by poets ink\u2019d?<\/span><\/p>

So oft didst thou touch stars with puzzled stare<\/span><\/p>

But fed not thy discourse with things divine.<\/span><\/p>

Of all those sparkling worlds dream’d none to heir,<\/span><\/p>

And heir’d none but a dream, a placeless shrine<\/span><\/p>

Where timeless Death hath seal’d thee up for aye,<\/span><\/p>

And where my thoughts, like pilgrims, hie by night<\/span><\/p>

T’affront anew old fondness of thine eye<\/span><\/p>

Deceiving sense with truthfulness of sight.<\/span><\/p>

So nature-like in wasted tinct of life<\/span><\/p>

Thy former self my fancies reinstate<\/span><\/p>

That drowsy mind engages in no strife<\/span><\/p>

Foul truth from fair untruth to separate.<\/span><\/p>

Pray, never say thou henceforth art not free,<\/span><\/p>

Since Hymen\u2019s bands enlink\u2019d us even faster.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Say, love, thou servest Love alone, not me,<\/span><\/p>

And he grants me no right to be thy master.<\/span><\/p>

Nor thee my mistress shall I wrongly call<\/span><\/p>

For selfsame reason, who art Love\u2019s fairest gift<\/span><\/p>

For me as I for thee, in neither\u2019s thrall,<\/span><\/p>

Abusing neither\u2019s treasure with unthrift.<\/span><\/p>

O, were I covetous (that should\u2019st thou fear!),<\/span><\/p>

I\u2019d tangle love in many a hateful knot.<\/span><\/p>

I hold thee not, for I hold thee most dear;<\/span><\/p>

He loves possessing who possess\u2019d Love not.<\/span><\/p>

Still seems to foul it in some way uncouth.<\/span><\/p>

Let no tongue say so, nor thine own so let,<\/span><\/p>

That oft chides mine for swearing none outdid<\/span><\/p>

Thy matchless match \u2018twixt face and heart; and yet,<\/span><\/p>

The more it chides, the less it should be chid.<\/span><\/p>

O, let thy truth find love\u2019s own truth to see<\/span><\/p>

That I speak true; and if I\u2019m truly wrong,<\/span><\/p>

Then (faultless thou!) the fault lies all with me<\/span><\/p>

To whom things seem so fair to thee belong.<\/span><\/p>

Whilst others\u2019 blind to those of thee in view.<\/span><\/p>

Those hearts I know too well by ill complexion<\/span><\/p>

That blackens each fair it doth encounter with;<\/span><\/p>

Even those who look askance on pure perfection<\/span><\/p>

And with fault-finding sight find fault therewith.<\/span><\/p>

From these I lock\u2019d my chest, lest none like gazed<\/span><\/p>

Into the privy chambers of my heart.<\/span><\/p>

There lie my riches not to be apprais\u2019d<\/span><\/p>

Grows straight inflam\u2019d by her aspect austere.<\/span><\/p>

So, being enamour\u2019d on her vestal hue,<\/span><\/p>

The swollen waves their restful beds forswear;<\/span><\/p>

And tempted so, contempt on earth they spew,<\/span><\/p>

In surging into the inviting air.<\/span><\/p>

Even thus my blood affected is by thee,<\/span><\/p>

In whose deep streams lascivious monsters breed<\/span><\/p>

In virtuous union, substances apart;<\/span><\/p>

Whereby these pretty rhymes, one by another,<\/span><\/p>

(Fair offspring of thy beauty) are born all.<\/span><\/p>

Since thou beget\u2019st them, I must prove their mother<\/span><\/p>

And by thy shadow blest, be pleas\u2019d withal;<\/span><\/p>

O, blessed heart, beat not so \u2018gainst my will<\/span><\/p>

Lest thy wild clamour ope my ports of light!<\/span><\/p>

In dream’s penumbra she looks queenlier still,<\/span><\/p>

And I to her, besides, seem kingly quite!<\/span><\/p>
